Egg Stage Development
Butterflies lay eggs on specific host plants that will provide food for caterpillars. The eggs contain nutrients and protective shells to support embryo development. Temperature and humidity influence incubation time, typically lasting 3-14 days before tiny caterpillars emerge.
Caterpillar Growth
Larvae (caterpillars) go through multiple growth stages called instars, shedding their exoskeleton 4-5 times. During this stage, caterpillars feed constantly on host plants, increasing their body mass dramatically. They develop distinctive coloration and features for defense against predators.
Metamorphosis Process
The transformation occurs inside a chrysalis where the caterpillar's body breaks down and rebuilds into an adult butterfly. This process takes 10-14 days as wings, compound eyes, and other adult structures form. The emerged butterfly pumps fluid into its wings before first flight. Shutdown123
